Independent Editor – Reaction

Ian Hargreaves, who yesterday accepted the post of editor of the Independent, said that he intends to continue the paper’s tradition of political non-alignment and to keep it firmly at the top end of the market. He said, “The Independent is an important voice in the diversity of the British media. It is important that it develops and remains.”

Hargreaves has received assurances from the board that none of its members can interfere editorially; this will include Andreas Whittam Smith, who remains chairman but on a part-time basis. He commented, “Ian Hargreaves was the first and unanimous choice of the directors. He will bring a fresh approach to the paper.”

Andrew Gowers, FT foreign editor succeeds Hargreaves as deputy editor.
