Independent Editor Resigns

Independent Editor Resigns

Last night saw yet another national newspaper lose its editor; Ian Hargreaves, editor of the Independent resigned yesterday. He has been editor of the Independent since August last year, when circulation was at 289,000. During Hargreave’s editorship circulation peaked at over 303,000, in June this year, but the latest circulation figures, for October, show the Independent at 296,869.

Charles Wilson, a former editor of The Times and a director of the Mirror Group will take over as acting editor. The favourite contender to succeed Ian Hargreaves is Andrew Marr, the paper’s political columnist. Hargreaves’ departure is believed to follow demands for further cost-cutting at the paper.

The Daily Express is also seeking an editor following the announcement earlier this month that Sir Nicholas Lloyd is to resign.
