Independent Editor To Stand Down
It is reported in Saturday’s Guardian that Andreas Whittam Smith has agreed to stand down as editor, and that four possible successors have already been interviewed. Andreas Whittam Smith declined to comment this morning on the report. Possible successors are Ian Jack, editor of the Independent on Sunday Ian Hargreaves, deputy editor of the FT and Nicholas Colchester, editorial director of the Economist.
The Independent is starting its own price trials from today in Birmingham. The paper will be on sale from today for 35p in the Birmingham area.
The Guardian Guide, the pocket size listings and review supplement currently circulated in the London area, is to be extended from July 9 to other Southern regions around London, such as Oxford, Reading and Luton. The Guardian has no plans to further expand until reaction to this move is analysed.
