The Independent and the Independent on Sunday may be taken over by the Italian newspaper groups which publish El Pais and La Repubblica, it has been revealed.
According to City reports the papers have made a formal indication that they wish to increase their stakes in Newspaper Publishing from 18.6% to 25% each, which would give them a joint majority share.
Urgent meetings are taking place this week to appoint a new chairman for the British publishers, following the resignation of Sir Ralf Dahrendof last week (Newsline 10/5).
