Today sees the launch of The Independent’s newly revamped Section Two; it is now in tabloid form, and covers “latest cultural trends.” The main section will cover news, home, foreign, business, sports and comment.

Each day will also cover a specific topic, Mondays is Network and architecture Tuesdays, media and science, Wednesdays health, finance and law, Thursday, films and education and Fridays is an extended national version of Metro.

Editorial in today’s issue includes a look at an ever growing band of sports stars who place faith in Christianity and asks whether their faith influences performance. There is an interview with the fantasy author, Terry Pratchett and designers’ and artists’ favourite things. There is a feature on the Internet which focuses on women and their increasing involvement in the net.

The changes to the Independent come at a time when its circulations is rising, at 296,397 for May this is an increase of 7% on May 1994, the third successive monthly advance.

Section Two has 28 pages of which 8 are appointments. Games, radio and satellite and television listings are also included giving the main section room for news items.
