iPlayer: Tablet viewing takes over PCs for first time

Boxing Day 2013 saw BBC iPlayer tablet viewing figures surpass those of PCs for the first time, after what was anticipated to be – and seemingly was – a tablet Christmas.

Almost a million people downloaded the iPlayer mobile and tablet apps between 21 December and New Year’s Day, taking the overall download figure past the 20 million mark.

During the same period, there were 102 million requests for TV and radio, with Dr Who – The Time of the Doctor taking the crown as the most popular programme, followed by Eastenders and Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special.

New Year’s Day saw almost 11 million requests for TV and radio programmes – iPlayer’s best figure yet – up 35% on the same period last year.

A full breakdown of iPlayer Christmas 2013 figures can be found on the BBC’s blog.
