The number of homes paying for IPTV – where content is delivered via the Internet rather than traditional terrestrial, satellite or cable formats – is expected to reach 167 million by the end of 2018, according to a new report from Digital TV Research.

At the end of 2012, the figure was recorded at 69 million, however is expected to more than double by the end of 2018, covering 97 countries.

From the 98 million subscribers to be added between the six year period, 71 million will be in the Asia Pacific region – 73% of new subscribers.

IPTV revenues are forecast to reach $21.3 billion in 2018, up from $12 billion in 2012 and $2.8 billion in 2008.

The US will remain the largest IPTV revenue earner by taking 30% of the 2018 total, followed by China, with revenues almost quadruple the country’s 2012 figure.
