Irish Newspaper Market Round Up

The latest circulation figures for the Irish newspaper market show further losses in circulation by the daily titles. The titles have been in decline in the last couple of years, hit by the poor economy and increased competition from British titles.

However, the losses this period are less severe than previously and, according to Fiona Scott, media manager of McConnells, speaking to the Irish Times, may “signal the end of the decline of newspaper circulation and the beginning of an upturn to benefit the industry.”

Two titles still suffered badly; the Dublin Evening Press and the Irish Press, down 16.2% and 17% respectively to 55,532 and 38,806. (ABC Jan-Jun 94). The only title to record an increase was the Dublin Irish Times, up 0.8% to 93,066.

The Sunday market also reflects the general falling circulations, with all but the Sunday Independent (Dublin) recording losses year on year. This recorded a slight gain of 0.3% to 253,291. The Sunday Press fared worst, down 8.6% year on year to 158,924.
