Irish Six Nations title victory peaks at 6.2m

Saturday saw rugby fans bid farewell to a sporting legend as Brian O’Driscoll played his final international match. Fittingly, it ended on a high as the Irish team held off a spirited fight-back from the French to clinch this year’s Six Nations championship.

Six Nations Rugby: France v Ireland saw a peak audience of over 6.2 million at around 6.45pm when the team were presented with the trophy, with an average viewing figure of 4.9 million for the whole programme.

Earlier in the afternoon, Six Nations Rugby: Italy v England pulled in 3.5 million viewers despite the match kicking off at 12.30pm. With the away side running in seven tries during a forlorn attempt at winning the championship, viewing figures peaked around 2pm at 4.4 million.

ITV’s Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway helped the channel win a healthy audience, pulling in 6.4 million viewers against The Voice.

However, despite the strong performance from the nation’s favourite Geordies, BBC One’s singing contest show pulled in the day’s highest ratings. Just over 6.7 million viewers tuned in the watch the first of this year’s knock-out rounds.

It was a similar story on Sunday night, with the second edition of The Voice grabbing 6.9 million, claiming the top spot ahead of long-running shows Countryfile (6.3 million) and Top Gear (6.1 million).

Over on Channel 4 Live from Space: Lap of the Planet captivated 1.7 million as they watched astronauts on the International Space Station complete a 90-minute orbit of Earth.
