ITC Against Pornographic Satellite Service

The Independent Television Commission (ITC) today notified the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Chris Smith, that the satellite service Channel Bizarre is unacceptable.
The ITC advised the Secretary that the channel should be subject to a proscription order under Section 177 of the Broadcasting Act 1990.
The satellite service was launched on 15 July, and transmits for up to four hours seven nights a week after 11pm. The Commission decided that ‘the service repeatedly included sexually explicit material which offended against good taste and decency, and that a proscription order would be in the public interest.’
Channel Bizarre is not the first service to fall prey to such action. Six channels, including Red Hot Dutch, TV Erotica, Eurotica Rendez Vous and Eros have also been notified to the Secretary of State (see Newsline).
A proscription order makes it a criminal offence to supply any equipment for use in connection of the operation of the service; to supply programme material or arrange for its supply; to place ads on the service; to publish any programme details of the service; and to supply or offer to supply any decoding equipment to enable the service to be received.
