ITC Closes Consultation Period On News At Ten
The Independent Television Commission yesterday brought its consultation period over the issue on whether to allow ITV to axe its News At Ten bulletin to a close (see Newsline).
The ITC received approximately 1700 submissions from the public and industry bodies, and will announce its decision soon after 19 November. It also commissioned an opinion poll, the results of which will be revealed at the same time that the watchdog discloses its decision.
ITV’s announcement that it wished to get rid of the news bulletin provoked opposition amongst the public, politicians and spokespeople, with the Prime Minister and Gerald Kaufman, the chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, (see Newsline) expressing disapproval at the proposition.
