ITC Concerned About ITV’s Regional Programming

The chairman of the Independent Television Commission (ITC), Sir Robin Biggam, has expressed concern about the decline in viewing and ratings for regional programmes on ITV, following the Network’s removal of the News at Ten.

A condition of the news bulletin’s move to the 11pm slot earlier this year (see First ITV Evening News Gains 7.2m Viewers) was an assurance that regional services would not suffer as a result. Although the overall performance of the new ITV schedule has not yet been fully analysed, it has become clear that regional news magazines have been suffering as a result of the shift.

The Commission has warned the ITV Network of its duty to fulfil a regional broadcasting remit and warned it of the necessity to reverse the current downward trend in order to maintain scheduling freedom.
