ITC Dismisses Complaints Against Raunchy CD:UK

The ITC has dismissed complaints that performances given by Christina Aguilera and Holly Vallance on ITV1’s Saturday morning show, CD:UK, were “inappropriate”.
The ITC received 13 separate complaints from viewers who were concerned that the performances were “too suggestive” for children.
The regulator acknowledged that the show is one of the most-watched music programmes on TV and despite the fact that it is aimed predominately at children, recognised the fact that 75% of its audience is over 16.
The ITC sympathised with the viewers’ concerns and commented: “Undoubtedly some performers and music videos are more suggestive than in the past, reflecting considerable changes in society with regard to sexual behaviour as well as pop music’s inherent boundary pushing nature.”
However, the regulator claimed that its regular monitoring of the show revealed that such performers did not dominate the programme. It stated: “We appreciate that parents and others are naturally concerned about the messages they believe certain images appear to send to children.”
CD:UK claimed there was an inherent difficulty in trying to attract the most popular performers whilst at the same time trying to ensure programmes are suitable for broadcast. They also pointed out that they regularly insist on changes to lyrics and to dance routines.
The ITC reminded the programme of the need to be vigilant at times when large numbers of children are watching, but dismissed the complaints.
