ITC Pledges Support For New Ofcom Chief

In an anticipated move (see Carter Set For Chief Executive Role at Ofcom), Ofcom today formally announced that Stephen Carter is to become its chief executive.

It was believed to be a closely fought race between ITC chief-executive Patricia Hodgson and Carter for the role.

Following the announcement, Patricia Hodgson commented: “Stephen is an excellent appointment for Ofcom. The ITC will do all it can to support him to get Ofcom up and running.”

In a statement Carter said: “An effective Ofcom is critical for all media and communications businesses. For me the opportunity was an irresistible one. I am delighted to join the board in helping bring Ofcom to life.”

Lord Currie, the chairman of Ofcom, added: “I am very pleased Stephen is to join us. He has exactly the right qualities as well as considerable experience of working in the advertising, broadcasting and telecommunications sectors.Stephen and the board will now begin to recruit a first-rate executive management team to support him.”

The new super-regulator has a tough job ahead of it, although Currie recently reassured the industry that the rules governing television advertising are likely to be relaxed later this year (see Ofcom Likely To Relax Broadcast Advertising Rules).
