ITC Publishes Code On Listed Sports Events

The Independent Television Commission has today announced a draft for the Code on Sports and Other Listed Events, as required under the Broadcasting Act 1996.

In the draft the “listed” events will be the FA Cup Final; the Scottish FA Cup Final (in Scotland); FIFA World Cup finals; the Derby; the Grand National; the Olympic Games; the Wimbledon Tennis Championships; and Cricket Test Matches involving England.

What this means is that broadcasters will not be able to acquire exclusive rights to live coverage of these eight events without the permission of the ITC. The watchdog has separated broadcasters into two categories: one for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 and the other for non-terrestrial channels. Before the ITC will agree to exclusive coverage it will need to be convinced that broadcasters in one category or the other have been given a “fair and reasonable” opportunity to acquire the rights.
