ITC Report Forecasts TV Future

ITC Report Forecasts TV Future

We could be facing a TV future with over 100 channels if digital television gets off the ground in the next 10 years, according to a report just released by the Independent Television Commission.

Because of the detailed technical changes that would have to be made to the existing transmission system (PAL) the commission recommends that digital television be introduced gradually over a 10-year period.

Deputy chief executive of the ITC, Peter Rogers, elaborated on how this technology could change the face of television, allowing greater scope for regional programming, more emphasis on sports channels and a greater variety of specialist material.

The use of digital technology will be discussed in terms of the future of Channel 5, the proposed new national station which has encountered technical problems since it was first mentioned over two years ago.

The discussion document on digital television is available from the ITC’s Information Office, 33 Foley Street, London W1P 7LB.
