ITC Revises Channel 4 Licence
The Independent Television Commission (ITC) published a revision of the Channel 4 licence this week, and introduced a number of changes in the Statement of Programme Policy.
The changes involve a reaffirmation of committment to things such as education, the UK film industry, multicultural programmes and programmes on and for people with disabilities. As well as this, the new Policy promises further diversity of programmes in the peak-time schedule including news, current affairs and religious items.
Channel 4 itself today announced that it will not be renewing its contracts with the National Football League or the National Basketball Association in order to make way for a new approach which will concentrate more on British sport. As well as being a response to changes in public demand, Mike Miller, commissioning editor for sport, also commented that: “Both American sports have been an invaluable part of our sports coverage over the years but now we want to look to the future.”
In February this year, the ITC consulted Channel 4 over what it described as a high level of ‘Americanisation’ in regard to its programme quota, highlighting the number of US sitcoms being broadcast.
