ITC Upholds Complaints On Corrie Video And Girlie Show

The ITC has upheld complaints from viewers who bought a special Coronation Street video. Viewers felt that they were misled by the fact that the video was promoted as “only available on video” but that an edited version of the video was actually broadcast on ITV at a later date.

Granada has sent a letter of apology to complainants, together with a copy of the Coronation Street 35th Anniversary book as a goodwill gesture; the ITC has welcomed this action and is not taking any further action.

Channel 4 has also fallen foul of the watchdog with its Girlie Show. An item about shoplifting on the series attracted complaints; although the ITC concluded that the programme was not an incitement to crime, it did criticise the two presenters. They failed to present the interview “in a responsible and appropriate manner”, said the ITC, and recommended that sensitive subject matter is handled by “experienced presenters or interviewers who have been properly trained and prepared” in the future.
