ITN Calls For Ofcom To Regulate BBC

ITN has called on the government to use the forthcoming Communications Bill to make the BBC put its new services under the jurisidiction of new super regulator, Ofcom.

Executives at ITN are reported in the national press and online to have submitted comments to the DCMS including allegations that the BBC abuses its position as a public service broadcaster by using licence fee money to offer services at reduced price and undercut commercial rivals, and in doing so has traded unfairly on a number of occasions.

A series of proposals is thought to have been put to the Government by the news provider, which would see the BBC having to submit to regulation by the proposed new cross-media regulator, Ofcom, instead of the board of governors and to be transparent regarding how its licence fee generated money is spent.
