ITN Considers 24-Hour Rolling News Service

ITN, the TV news production company, is understood to be in the process of planning a 24-hour UK rolling news service, which it hopes will bring the ITN brand forward over the next few years. ITN already has a 50% stake in EuroNews, the multilingual rolling news service, and it is thought that this could provide the infrastructure for the possible venture.

According to reports, the news network is currently assessing whether it will be able to balance the start up costs of the venture with revenues. ITN’s shareholders, Carlton Communications, Daily Mail & General Trust, Granada, United News & Media, Scottish Media Group and Reuters, would have to shoulder the considerable start-up costs of the project.

When contacted by Newsline ITN gave the following statement: “As an international multimedia organisation, ITN is always looking at new opportunities to develop the business. ITN already operates EuroNews, the international news channel whose programmes can be seen in 146 countries around the world. No decisions have yet been made about a news channel specifically focused on the UK.”
