ITN Ownership Problems

Independent Television News has appealed to the government to postpone the enforcement of any ownership changes following the ITV mergers.

No single shareholder is allowed to own more than 20% of ITN; however, the Carlton takeover of Central and the Granada takeover of LWT mean that Carlton and Granada each own 36% of ITN. The other shareholders are Reuters, with 18% and Scottish and Anglia both with 5%.

The ITC has written to ITN and its shareholders reminding them of the 20% rule and requesting that the issue be resolved this year. ITN has requested that changes to ownership should come at the same time as changes to cross-media ownership rules.
