ITV and ITV2 are soon to be carried on the Sky Digital platform, according to a report in the Independent On Sunday. Following on from the Government’s White Paper last week which stated that terrestrial channels should be available on all platforms, the network has said that its output will be available on the SkyDigital platform “soon.”
ITV and ITV2 were withheld from carriage on the Sky Digital platform in order to differentiate ONdigital’s multi-channel offerings from those of its rival. The move has backfired on the network, however, with audience share for ITV tumbling in Sky homes (see ITV Slips While Non-Terrestrials Improve In Digital Television Homes).
The chairman of Granada Media and Carlton, which jointly own ONdigital, have indicated that it is a question of “when” rather than “if” ITV will be available on digital satellite and it is expected that the channels will be carried on SkyDigital by June 2001.
