ITV Comes Under Fire For ‘Cashing In’ On Murder
ITV has come under attack from Doreen and Neville Lawrence, the parents of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence. The broadcaster is planning to screen a set of interviews with the teenager’s alleged killers, and Imran Kahn, solicitor for the Lawrences, has accused ITV of cashing in on the murder.
The five prime suspects in the case have recorded interviews for ITV’s current affairs programme Tonight. Presented by Trevor McDonald, the programme is expected to be broadcast this Thursday 8 April. Gary Dobson, David Norris, Luke Knight, Jamie Acourt and Neil Acourt have all at one point been charged with the as yet unsolved murder of Stephen Lawrence at a bus stop in Eltham, south-east London, in April 1993.
A spokesperson from Granada told Newsline this afternoon that as yet it has failed to meet up with the Lawrences to discuss the programme, although the Lawrences had been informed by them of its production. The television group believes that the interview contains important new material which takes the case further, but is sure that the programme will not provide a platform for the suspects.
