ITV Keep Rights To Champions League

ITV has signed a deal giving it coverage of the UEFA Champions League until the year 2000. The new three year deal gives ITV exclusive British rights to the newly extended Champions League for three seasons from 1997/98.

ITV has screened the Champions League since it was created five years ago and has achieved audiences of around 10 million. From 1997/98 season onwards the Champions League format will have two English representatives – the Premiership champions and runners up – as well as the Scottish champions.

Mike Southgate, Commercial Director of the ITV Network Centre, said “We’re delighted to be able to extend our partnership with UEFA for this European club competition. It is also good news for viewers that the event will stay on terrestrial television in the next century.”
