ITV Names Hamilton New Daytime Controller

Liam Hamilton has been appointed the new controller of daytime at ITV, following the resignation of Maureen Duffy last week.

Hamilton was formerly managing director and director of broadcasting at LWT before leaving to become CEO of Worldpop.com in 2000. His experience also includes a stint as editor and executive producer at GMTV and editor of This Morning.

The job Hamilton is taking on is not without its challenges in the current climate. In addition to the well-documented difficulties ITV is experiencing in retaining both audience share and revenue (see ITV Abandons Performance Target Strategy), daytime at ITV1 suffered a major blow last summer with the departure of Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan from flagship show This Morning.

Having retained a higher rating than rival BBC1 for the first half of the year, the downward slide of ITV1’s ratings in the 9.30-12.30 daypart coincided with rising BBC fortunes in the latter half of the year. For the afternoon daypart, BBC1 consistently beat ITV1 in the ratings throughout 2001.
