ITV Ownership Approved By MPs
In a vote early this morning MPs voted 144 to 109 to approve the government order announced last week by Peter Brooke, which would allow ITV companies to merge.
The Independent Television Commission will publish a consultation document on the 25% ruling before Christmas ; the results will be released early 1994.
The current situation has led to confusion because if the proposed merger between Carlton and Central goes ahead, the companies’ joint revenue would be over 30%, and would therefore have to be sold separately. Several contractors will be pushing for the ITC to raise the limit from 25% of ITV revenue to 25% of total broadcast revenue.
