ITV Reaches Target Audience Share

ITV announced this week that it has reached its stated target of a 38% share of the peaktime audience for the year to date. The targets were announced at the beginning of the year by chief executive Richard Eyre (see Newsline).

It emerged in September however, that ITV would be unable to attain these targets without moving its News At Ten bulletin (see Newsline). For this, approval was required from the Independent Television Commission, and this was granted near the end of November (see Newsline).

Speaking at this year’s MRG Conference in Nice, France, Richard Eyre described ITV’s targets as ‘fantastically ambitious’ (see Newsline), yet within reach. ITV’s marketing and commercial director, John Hardie, commented this week: “With only the two Christmas weeks to go, we are delighted that we have delivered to our customers a high performance schedule, especially during the most commercially important sections of the year.”

This announcement could be considered well-timed, as it comes just before the Christmas period, when the BBC traditionally comes up trumps in the viewing stakes.
