ITV Sets Up Sports Archive

The London News Network and the Independent Sports Network (LNN/ISN) are to set up a comprehensive archive of sport on behalf of the ITV Network.

For the first time, the best of ITV sport transmissions from the last twenty-five years will be brought together, catalogued and developed to provide material on a commercial basis to terrestrial, satellite and cable broadcasters, as well as the makers of commercials, feature films, corporate videos and CD ROM.

Fifty thousand ITV sport tapes – including World Of Sport and Midweek Sport, league, European and world cup soccer, domestic and international athletics, rugby, boxing, gymnastics, wrestling and snooker – will be housed under one roof at the London Studios.

The new tape library will be open seven days a week. A customised computer database has been specifically designed to create a ‘user friendly’ research tool which , when fully operational, will be available via modem to anyone requiring sports material.

Mike Southgate, commercial director of the ITV Network Centre, commented: “It has significant marketing potential for ITV.”
