ITV Wins Formula One From BBC

The battle for sports coverage continues with the announcement that Formula One motor racing coverage is to change from the BBC to ITV from 1997. The new deal with ITV, worth £60 million, gives ITV rights for five years.

ITV will broadcast all sixteen races in the FIA Formula One World Championship live on Sundays, with a highlights programme. ITV will also broadcast a new motorsport programme in the build-up to each Grand Prix, including coverage of the qualifying sessions. There will also be action from the FIA International Touring Car Championship and the FIA Formula 3000 International Championship.

Marcus Plantin commented, “This is another major sporting coup for ITV, following hot on the heels of our recent acquisition of the FA Cup. When we are offered events of this calibre, we have no hesitation in snapping them up very quickly.”
