The first episode of ITV1’s two-part psychological drama, The Kindness Of Strangers, pipped Channel 4’s Big Brother with more than 25% of the adult viewing share compared to BB’s 22.7% share.
More than four-and-a-half million adult viewers tuned in to the drama, which follows a fortysomething businesswoman struggling to cope after the arrival of twins; juggling caring for her babies, working from home and dealing with a teenage son. As a consequence, her marriage suffers, and a chance meeting with a seemingly generous widow becomes a friendship that soon takes a sinister turn.
ITV1 had a straight run with Emmerdale and Coronation Street both nabbing almost 50% of the viewing share between 7pm and 8pm. The Bill kept nearly four million adult viewers’ attention (22.9%) before The Kindness Of Strangers, with BBC One’s Holby City following closely behind with 21.4% of the adult viewing share, and BBC Two’s Springwatch getting 17.2% or almost three million adult viewers.
Home And Away was Five’s most successful programme of the evening with almost one-and-a-half million adult viewers.
