ITV’s Corrie leads another soap-filled Monday with 7.7m

As usual, Monday night saw BBC One and ITV’s variety of shouty tales from soap land take the day’s top four places, with a double barrage of cobbled action from Coronation Street leading the pack.

The first trip to Weatherfield at 7:30pm on ITV pulled in the day’s biggest audience as a solid 7.7 million viewers and a 35% share tuned in to see dead modern Rita receive a message on social media.

The return visit at 8:30pm wasn’t quite as popular but still managed to attract 7.1 million viewers and a 32% share as Norris came in the way of Scary Mary’s burgeoning love life.

A little earlier at 7pm was ITV’s other soap, with gritty rural farming drama Emmerdale securing Monday’s fourth place with 6.5 million viewers and a 32% share.

BBC One’s EastEnders (8:00pm) was the second most popular soap of the day and the third most watched show, with the cheerful London drama delivering its start-of-the-week dose of psychosis, cirrhosis and Bobby bloody Beale.

An audience of 7 million viewers tuned in to see Martin Fowler 3.0 struggle as a suddenly single parent (among many, many other issues), resulting in a 31% share.

At 8pm on Channel 4, it was time for the third and final instalment of How to Lose Weight Well and, as usual, one of those Dr van Tulleken brothers and a TV nutrition type were on hand to state the obvious and stretch the thrilling answers over one last hour.

Turns out the key method is not eating shite all the time, instead concentrating on healthy, low fat foods, with an audience of 1.4 million viewers and a 6% share tuning in for the revelation.

On BBC Two, University Challenge secured 3.1 million viewers and a 14% share while one half of the Bake Off judging team proved there is no rest for the wicked at 8:30pm.

Mary-Berry

The first episode of Mary Berry’s Foolproof Cooking was the latest project for the UK’s busiest 80 year old and secured a decent 2.9 million viewers and a 13% share.

8pm saw ITV’s latest Corrie sandwich filler Griff’s Great Britain net a reasonable 3.2 million viewers, with scenes of Rhys Jones exploring Dartmoor National Park securing a 14% share.

Over on BBC One, the guns were out for Russia’s most popular totalitarian leader, with Panorama – Putin’s Secret Riches (8:3pm) bringing in 2.9 million viewers and a 13% share.

There were a number of contenders placed all the way up at the lofty heights of the 9pm prime time spot, with BBC One’s cut and paste brand of modern grittiness Silent Witness (9pm) once again leading the way. [advert position=”left”]

5.7 million viewers tuned in for the seventh episode in three weeks as the cadaver-fond gang kicked off another new case ‘ripped straight from the headlines’.

Last night’s story of an innocent being gunned down by cops and the subsequent cover-up secured a 25% share for BBC One.

On ITV the eighth series of Benidorm continued to dispense the usual levels of old fashioned comedy, while recovering slightly from last week’s series low.

Yesterday’s adventure in tired camp innuendos, fart jokes and Johnny Vegas was watched by 4 million viewers and an 18% share.

On BBC Two, Immortal Egypt with Joann Fletcher (9pm) saw the refreshing historian wrap up her odyssey through the country’s mythical, spiritual and factual past.

The final episode detailed the fall of ancient Egypt and the countless invasions that nearly destroyed evidence of its colourful history, with 1.1 million viewers and a 5% share joining in for one last enthusiastic walk through sandy ruins.

At the same time, Channel 4 brought its alternative romance show on a bit of a jolly for The Undateables: Holiday Romance (9pm). 1.4 million viewers tuned in to catch up with old favourites as they spread the love abroad, resulting in a 6% share.

There was also some ‘real life’ action over on Channel 5 at the same time, but the outright horror show that is this year’s (first) Celebrity Big Brother (9pm) existed on an entirely different plain of reality entertainment.

2.2 million viewers spent their Monday night watching charming human being Tiffany Pollard spent some personal time in the toilet, resulting in a 10% share.
