ITV’s ‘Gogglebox outdoors’ Travel Guides wraps up with 2.1m

Monday night brought an end to ITV’s ‘experimental’ holiday show Travel Guides (pm) after an initial run of four episodes, with the final Gogglebox-outside-the -home experience seeing the nomadic families relaxing a little closer to home.

Representing us normal folk – the small but essential cogs of the nation – producers finally allowed goobby and suspiciously TV-ready everyday norms to speak up on our behalf, sending them to all corners of the earth to report back in the way that only ‘real’ people can.

The show opened up with 2.7 million viewers way back at the start of the month but the following weeks saw the initial morbid curiosity wain slightly as the audience fell.

There has been a steady decline since the Travel Guides had to deal with their first difficulties (Thailand – dirty!), falling to 2.4 million (Dubai – cultural education for the ignorant) and then 2.3 million for last week’s adventure (Tenerife – tacky!).

Yesterday saw the various clans descend upon the Lake District while they dished out their own unique opinions, with one model-turned-reality-star having a proper TOWIE-level meltdown while on a climbing wall.

Last night’s combination of real people, real holidays and highly affected personalities secured 2.1 million viewers, a 19% drop from the first outing, with the possible final-ever outing netting a 10% share for ITV.

It was BBC One’s turn to do an ‘ITV’ by taking a summer evening off with a handy repeat of international super hit Sherlock (8:30pm). The third episode of the third series originally brought in an overnight audience of 8.8 million viewers back in January 2014, but yesterday’s rerun bagged just 2.2 million viewers and a 10% share.

Surprisingly, it was BBC Two that nabbed the 9pm crown from its competitors with the launch of a brand new show about public transport. World’s Busiest Railway 2015 (9pm) saw Dan Snow, Anita Rani, Kryten from Red Dwarf and him off Dave panel shows wander about Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus while sharing its ‘secrets’ with viewers.

The biggest prime time audience really did tune in to BBC Two to spend their evening watching commuters fight to get into a packed train, resulting in 2.8 million viewers and a 13% share.

At the same time there was another parade of wronguns over on Channel 4 as 24 Hours in Police Custody (9pm) continued to pile the damage on all of the Luton Tourism Board’s good efforts. 1.4 million viewers watched the real life arrests and interviews unfold, bringing in 1.4 million viewers and a 7% share.

Meanwhile there was some alarmist investigation on offer with the interestingly titled Inside Scientology – and Escaping the Witnesses (9pm).

[advert position=”left”]This being a Channel 5 joint, there weren’t any new insights into the church or its following, just lots of horror stories and scary music to signpost viewers’ expected emotions. The show pulled in 1.2 million viewers and a 6% share.

A bit earlier Vet School (8pm) was watched by 2.5 million viewers (a 12% share) on ITV while Channel’s 5’s latest CCTV clip-fest Beware (8pm) brought in 730,000 viewers and a 3% share.

On Channel 4 at 8pm, there was Bear’s Wild Weekend with Miranda Heart. Don’t worry urine-sloshing fans, the two celebs didn’t wake up in a sordid hostel in Blackpool with their careers and relationships in tatters; instead it was a simple camping trip designed to showcase Bear’s winning personality.

873,000 viewers and a 4% share tuned in to experience the chemistry while they survived life in the Swiss Alps.

Muslim-Drag-Queens

At 10pm, Channel 4 continued on its mission to film every corner of modern British life, with the controversial Muslim Drag Queens (10pm) netting 987,000 viewers, a 6% share and unsurprisingly topping the TV Twitter Chart.

Earlier at 7pm, charming teatime soap Emmerdale (ITV) was still knee deep in corpses, with 6 million viewers and a 33% share tuning in to see if Ross Barton really was among the dead.

Over on BBC One at 8pm there were a lot of mentions of Kathy Beale but no actual appearance on EastEnders as Phil Mitchell prepared to deal with the fallout of his ex-wife’s return. 6.1 million viewers tuned in to see the one remaining Mitchell brother shed a rare tear, resulting in a 28% share.

A double dollop of ITV’s Coronation Street nabbed Monday’s top two spots as ex-X Factor popstrel Shayne Ward settled into the cast. A little less than 7 million viewers (a 35% share) tuned in at 7:30pm, falling to 6.6 million viewers and a 35% share at 8:30pm.
