Soaps

The top programme for the first six months of 1995 was unsurprisingly Coronation Street. From the week ending 15/01/95 it was watched by 19.44 million viewers. Coronation Street completely dominates the soap category, with 35 placings all ahead of Eastenders highest rated episode of 17.02 million viewers.

Films

The top rated film of ’95 was the network premiere of Home Alone, which was watched by 15.18 million viewers. The second most watched film was the repeated showing of Pretty Woman with 11.45 million viewers, the third being Lethal Weapon 2.

Comedy

BBC1’s Goodnight Sweetheart was the top rated of the first half of 1995 with all of the new series episodes charting in the top thirty programmes list, the highest being 13.45 million viewers for the week ending 05/03/95. ITV’s top comedy programme was Do It Yourself Mr Bean, with 12.96 million viewers.

Light Entertainment

The National Lottery has given BBC1 the top spot in the light entertainment category. The highest rating for 1995 being 18.21 million who watched the Lottery in the week ending 26/03/95. ITV’s highest rating was for International Gladiators in the week ending 12/02/95, this was watched by 14.07 million.

Drama

Casualty secured the top rated drama of 1995 with 16.75 million people watching the week ending 26/03/95. This was .53 million more than ITV top drama A Touch of Frost. The highest rating for a new drama series was 15.48 million for Granada’s Band of Gold for the week ending 09/04/95.

Sport

Only four sporting programmes have appeared in the top thirty programme lists for the half of 1995. They were; Big Fight Live w/e 26/02/95 with 13.06 million viewers, 1995 Grand National w/e 09/04/95 watched by 11.92 million people, Arsenal v Real Zaragoza w/e 14/05/95 watched by 9.89 million people and England v New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup semi-final w/e 18/06/95 watched by 8.18 million people.

Factual

Antiques Roadshow is the top factual programme with 14.01 viewers for the week ending 29/01/95.

Documentary

Only two documentary programmes have appeared in the top thirty programmes list so far this year and they were; Police Stop shown in the week ending 08/01/95 watched by 14.25 million people and Police, Camera, Action shown in the week ending 23/04/95 watched by 11.76 million people.

News

The top news programme of the year was the BBC Sunday late evening news in the week ending 05/02/95 which was watched by 11.96 million people.
