JCDecaux Appoints New Director Of Special Projects

JCDecaux has appointed Yan Huybrechts as its new director of special projects with responsibility for developing the company’s expansion outside of its core billboard, street furniture and airport operations.

Huybrechts joins the company from Network Rail’s property estates department where he was commercial advertising manager. Prior to that he was board director at MediaVest where he led the agency’s non-television buying operations working with clients such as Masterfoods and Royal Mail.

Jeremy Male, JCDecaux’s UK and Northern European chief executive, said: “JCDecaux already has a leading position in the UK outdoor market. With exciting potential for growth on the horizon, Yan will be an excellent addition to our management team.”

The appointment is understood to have caused friction with rival outdoor advertising companies because it comes just weeks after National Rail put its lucrative multi-million pound rail and roadside business out to tender.

Huybrechts has overseen National Rail’s existing contracts with a number of outdoor contractors and reports suggest JCDecaux’s rivals are concerned the appointment will give the company an unfair advantage when submitting future tenders.

Last month JCDecaux announced the launch of a new 6-sheet product which it claims could revolutionise the market by allowing advertisers to change their creative executions from day to night display (see JCDecaux Launches New Creative Format For Advertisers).

The outdoor industry has been performing well recently and the latest figures from the Outdoor Advertising Association show that revenue increased by 6.6% year on year to more than £195 million in the three months to September 2003 (see Q3 Gain Makes Outdoor The UK’s Fastest Growing Medium).
