JCDecaux Wins Leicester Street Furniture Contract

JCDecaux has secured the contract to provide street furniture to the city of Leicester in a deal thought to be worth around £16 million in advertising revenue over the next 15 years.

The contract, which was previously held by Clear Channel, consists of 500 advertising faces including bus shelters, freestanding units and a number of non-advertising shelters.

From early next year JCDecaux will begin replacing the Clear Channel owned Adshel shelters and replacing them with specially designed black and gold ones, which have been created to improve the city centre.

JCDecaux now claims to control nine of the UK’s top 15 cities’ bus shelters, including those in Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham and Nottingham. It also has bus shelters in 19 of London’s 33 boroughs.

Commenting on the win, JCDecaux’s managing director, Pierre Jeanjean, said: “We are delighted to become a partner with Leicester City Council for such an important contract. The new bus shelters and other equipment will provide better facilities for bus users and Leicester’s community. Maintenance will be a key element of this contract and JCDecaux will be recruiting a dedicated, locally based work force for that purpose.”

Last month, French-owned JCDecaux released its third quarter financial results showing that sales were down to £224.5 million, a fall of 0.9% against the same period last year (see Advertising Conditions To ‘Remain Tight’, Says JCDecaux). Street furniture and billboard revenues were up by around 3% to £115 million and £64 million respectively. However, transport advertising was down by 16.5% to £44 million due largely to the post-9/11 fallout which has seen a decline in US air travel.
