John Mulholland, ex-editor of Sporting Life(see Newsline), has been appointed deputy editor on The Observer, which is owned by the Guardian Media Group. He left The Guardian earlier this year to work on The Sporting Life.
The Observer saw a new editor earlier this year (see Newsline) in Roger Alton, who said of Mulholland: “I have known John for a number of years and he possesses the most highly developed editing skills of almost anyone I have ever worked with”. The Observer saw a 9.6% fall in its circulation in the latest NRS figures (see Newsline).
Mirror Group’s The Sporting Life is planned for a re-launch, although recent reports have suggested that its future is un-certain (see Newsline).
Mulholland’s new position is effective from 14 September.
