Johnston Press Acquires 11 Mansfield Titles

Johnston Press has announced it has acquired the newspaper interests of W&J Linney Limited for £20 million cash. The deal, which is subject to approval by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, covers 11 local newspaper titles which circulate in and around the Mansfield and Worksop areas.
Two of the titles, the Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser, (The Chad) and the Worksop Guardian are weekly paid-for titles, while the remaining titles are free.
W&J Linney recorded pre-tax profits of £1m in the year ending March 1995, on turnover of £8.362 million. Linney’s newspaper division will become part of Johnston Newspapers (Midlands) which currently incorporates Wilfred Edmunds Ltd, publisher of the Derbyshire Times, based in Chesterfield, and the Ripley based G C Brittain and Sons Limited.
It is also believed that Johnston Press are still interested in buying some of Reed’s regional titles, which were put up for sale in July.
