Johnston Press has announced an exchange of regional newspaper titles with Newsquest Media Group for £9.25 million. The exchange comprises the £5.75m sale of three paid for and two free titles published by Johnston in Bury and the £15m acquisition of one paid for and three free Newsquest titles in the Doncaster area. The deal is subject to the consent of the Board of Trade for Johnston’s Doncaster acquisition.
Johnston says the Doncaster titles fill a circulation gap for them in South Yorkshire; the Bury titles are isolated from Johnston’s other operations, and are printed elsewhere which causes delays.
The paid for Bury titles going to Newsquest are the Bury Times, Radcliffe Times, and Prestwich & Whitefield Guide. The two frees are Bury Times Mid Week and Bury Messenger. The Doncaster titles going to Johnston Press are the paid for Doncaster Free Press, the frees Doncaster Courier, Dearne Courier and Goole, Howden and Thorne Courier.
