The warbling falsetto of the final 12 Josephs in Any Dream Will Do attracted an average adult audience of more than 5.4 million to BBC One on Saturday night, gaining far more viewers than ITV1’s reality singing contest Grease Is the Word.
The delightfully camp melange of Technicolour dreamcoats gave BBC One a 28.6% viewing share between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, whilst the results programme, which saw the group downsized to 11, drew around 5.7 million (a 30.5% share) straight after.
Earlier, ITV1’s show of a similar format, Grease Is the Word, gained an audience of just over 3.7 million adults on average, giving the broadcaster a 23.6% viewing share between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
Up against Joseph’s results show, the Dame Edna Treatment managed almost 1.9 million adult viewers (10.4%), whilst Five’s CSI: NY gained almost 2.2 million (11.8%).
The FA Cup semi-final that shot Manchester United through to the finals also scored well for BBC One. The match attracted an average adult audience of more than 5.6 million, giving the channel a viewing share of 40.6% from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Previously, the Grand National horserace had been watched by a peak of more than seven million adults, with many presumably disappointed that their nag didn’t cross the finish line first.
Almost 6.8 million adults joined the delectable Doctor Who (David Tennant) for his latest adventures with new sidekick stunner Martha (Freema Agyeman). Russell T Davies’ vision of the car ruled future gave the channel a 37% audience share prior to Any Dream Will Do.
Antiques Roadshow was the channel’s biggest hit on Sunday evening, with an adult audience of almost 4.2 million, whilst Castaway managed a little under two million viewers.
Superstorm managed almost 3.6 million on average, however, with its futuristic view where global warming has led to ferocious hurricanes and a team of scientists must investigate ways of diverting storms.
Coronation Street, The Royal and Foyle’s War were ITV1’s biggest success stories of the evening, with Corrie attracting over 8.6 million (46%), The Royal bringing in over 7.5 million (36%) and Foyle’s War netting almost 7.3 million (35.5%).
