June Cinema Admissions Highest For 30 Years

Despite the challenge of the World Cup, UK cinema managed its highest June admissions total for 30 years last month. A total of 12.2 million visits were made to see films including Spiderman and Star Wars: Episode 2, representing a year on year increase for the period of 30%.

Despite launching on a weekend when both England and Ireland were playing World Cup matches, Spiderman had the highest opening box office weekend of this year, taking £5.9m. The film went on to take £21m by the end of the month.

Christine Costello, vice president of the CAA, commented: “Such a strong performance over the first half of 2002 puts cinema in a great position to achieve another record-breaking year.”

The CAA is predicting that admissions for the full year will reach their 174 million, the highest since 1971. The first half of the year has seen 25% year on year growth to 87.7 million, and the coming months will see the release of the second Men In Black, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films.
