Jupiter MMXI Unveils Combined Internet Data

Jupiter MMXI has published its first report charting UK internet usage both at home and at work and has revealed that over 18 million people accessed the internet from these locations during December 2001.

Jupiter MMXI’s international research director, Jonathan Jephcott, said: “The release of the combined work and home data provides the media industry with the information that it has been asking for. The results show that there are clear differences in how the web is used at work, both in terms of the most popular sites and the amount of time spent on them.”

Portals, internet service providers (ISPs) and news websites experienced significant growth as a result of the at home and at work data merging, with portals and ISPs showing an average increase in usage of over 22 minutes per month during December.

Google.com became the top ranking search engine in the combined usage report, replacing Askjeeves.co.uk, which is the favourite site for at home users. In the news and information category, BBC.co.uk extended its lead on the sector from 17.8% to 24% and Guardian.co.uk, CNN.com, Ananova.co.uk, The-Times.co.uk and Telegraph.co.uk all experienced growth in the number of unique users, as a result of workers searching for news during the day.

In the travel category Easyjet.com, Lastminute.com and Expedia.co.uk attracted more visitors and banking and finance sites extended their reach, with Lloydstsb.com and Egg.com proving the most popular.
