Karaoke – Better For C4 Than BBC1

Karaoke, the first of Dennis Potter’s final two plays , was shown on BBC1 at 9.30pm on Sunday evening and repeated at 10.00pm on Channel 4 on Monday.

Unofficial overnight figures for both performances show that Channel 4 seems to have benefited most from the broadcasts.

The BBC undoubtedly suffered from placing the drama head on against ITV’s new series of the popular drama ‘The Knock’, which took nearly 50% of all individual live viewers across all channels.

Channel 4 on the other hand achieved a higher than average TV rating for a Monday evening amongst individuals of 4 (12% share of viewing).

The BBC defended its decision to show the programme as evidence of its breadth of programming; stating that Karaoke was never billed as a ratings winner.
