£99 “Kitchen” Digital Radio To Go On Sale

The market for digital radio looks set to be boosted with the launch of another sub-£100 DAB digital radio. VideoLogic Systems is has launched the Pure Evoke-1, a “kitchen style” DAB radio which will be sold at John Lewis in Oxford Street from this month onwards, before rolling out across retailers including Argos, Allders and Empire Direct.

VideoLogic president, Kevin Dale, commented: “The pent-up demand for low cost, high performance DAB products, proven by the limited edition £99 radio last year (see Cut Price Digital Radio Promotion Is Success), can now be satisfied with a high volume, sub £100 product. [This] is the first of a new wave of lower-cost DAB radios using the latest third generation DAB technology, and will undoubtedly bring a rush of new listeners.”

Last month details were released of another sub-£100 DAB device going on sale- a card which adapts PCs to recieve services (see Breakthrough Price Point For DAB). In addition, recent research suggested that listeners prefer digital to analogue radio, given the choice (see Research Shows Digital Radio Is The Preferred Choice).

Digital One this week announced that it has switched on 3 new DAB digital radio transmitters in Darvel, Exeter and Redruth. This brings the total number of transmitters to 66, with plans in place to grow the reach of the national commercial network, with eight more transmitters, planned later this year. This will give Digital One at least 85 per cent coverage by the end of 2002.
