Labour Reviews Media Ownership Policy

Labour Reviews Media Ownership Policy

Labour is reviewing its policy on media regulation, which is likely to end restrictions on cross-ownership between terrestrial TV companies and newspapers, and to include a review of the 1990 Broadcasting Act.

The review will seek a regulatory policy covering television, cable television radio and newspapers, either through a form of restriction on regional share of audiences, or a points system with an upper limit based on audience share, as in the current radio restrictions.

However, moves towards a more deregulatory approach to media ownership proposed by Mo Mowlam may be opposed by the party.
