LBC LOSES FRANCHISE

LBC LOSES FRANCHISE

The Radio Authority has today announced which bidders have been awarded the eight ILR licences for Greater London.

LBC, which has broadcast since October 1973, has lost its franchise on both AM and FM, to London News Radio. The new licence comes into effect on 8 October 1994. The chairman of London News Radio is Peter Thornton, an ex LBC chief.

The other existing stations which reapplied for a licence were all successful; Jazz FM, Kiss 100 FM, Melody Radio and Spectrum International Radio.

There were two new stations awardedlicences; Sunrise Radio, which will take over a frequency occupied by GLR; BBC Radio Kent is to relinquish its AM licence and this is to be replaced by London Country Radio.

Licences will run for a period of eight years from the commencement of broadcasting under each new licence.

The Radio Authority will be readvertising the licences held by Capital Radio in Spring 1994. The Government has brought forward the availability of two further London FM frequencies (to be effective from mid 1995), and the Authority also hopes to advertise these and possibly one or more AM frequencies in Spring 1994. The Authority will allow applicants unsuccessful on this occasion to reapply.
