LBC Signs Over To London Radio
This morning at 6am London Radio replaced LBC. LBC, Britain’s first independent commercial radio station had been broadcasting for 21 years. It has been replaced by London Radio; London News Radio on FM and London News Talk on the AM frequency.
The Radio Authority announced that LBC lost its franchise in September of last year; there were petitions to save the station, but in March it went into receivership, and was rescued by a £1m bid from London Radio to ensure continued broadcasting up until today’s launch.
Capital will find out on Friday if they have been reawarded their licences; four other London licences will also be announced by the Radio Authority. One hopeful bidder for an FM licence is Richard Branson’s Virgin.
