Licence Fee To Rise Above Inflation

Licence Fee To Rise Above Inflation

Television licence fees will increase to £97.50 for a colour licence and £32.50 for a black and white licence from 1 April 1998, which is an increase of 6.5% on the current cost. The above inflation rise will be used to pay for the BBC’s new digital services.

The Government is quick to point out however that, as part of a five-year programme, the licence fee will actually fall in real terms after the year 2000 – down RPI minus 1% for 2000/2001 and RPI minus 2.5% for 2001/2002.
