Live TV Closes Local Stations
The cable channel Live TV is shutting down its local versions of the service in Liverpool and Newcastle. The station will focus on the remaining local operations in Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester and Westminster, where there tends to be a significantly greater number of viewers with access to cable. Furthermore Live faces competition from Daily Mail & General Trust’s Channel One on Merseyside:
“Liverpool cannot sustain two local stations and Newcastle simply does not have enough cable subscribers”, reasoned Mark Cullen, managing director.
However the Mirror Group owned cable operator is exploring the possibility of launching a London-wide operation following the departure of Channel One in the capital (see Channel One Closes After 4 Years). Cullen described this as a “new, greater opportunity”. Liverpool and Newcastle will now just receive the nationally networked version of Live.
Mr Cullen concluded: “We are concentrating our local efforts where we can achieve most commercial success and these offer substantial advertising revenue potential.”
