Lloyd Webber May Bid For Express

Press speculation is mounting that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is interested in making a bid for the Express group titles; he is said to have been interested in newspapers for a long time. United News and Media will not confirm that it is seeking a buyer for the Express, but it is believed that the Express titles would fetch at least £300m.

Lloyd Webber is founder of the theatrical and music copyright company the Really Useful Group which is 30% owned by Polygram.

Other possible buyers are believed to be Tony O’Reilly’s Independent Newspaper Group, which owns a share in Newspaper Publishing, publishers of the Independent.

The Daily Express has yet to appoint a new editor following last week’s announcement that Sir Nicholas Lloyd has resigned. The paper has also put its price up, to 35p from 32p, bringing it to the same price as its rival the Daily Mail.
