Loaded Appoints New Deputy Editor

IPC Ignite’s flagship men’s title, Loaded, has appointed News Of The World sports writer Martin Daubney as deputy editor.
He is the first high profile journalist to jump ship from the News Of The World, since editor Rebekah Wade moved to its sister title The Sun (see New Sun Editor Says Job Is Best In Newspapers).
Daubney was editor of Sin Bin, a light-hearted section in the sports pages of the paper. He will take up his new role in early February and report directly to editor, Scott Manson, who commented: “Martin has a great journalistic background which fits perfectly with our mission to publish the very best men’s magazine out there. He really understands what young men want now and will be a great addition to my team.”
Prior to joining the News Of The World, Daubney was editor of Page3.com and before that spent a year researching possible launch opportunities within the men’s sector for News International. He also worked as features editor at Emap’s premier lads mag, FHM.
Daubney commented: “Men’s magazines are in my blood and I can’t wait to get back to the coal face. It’s an honour to work for Loaded and I’ve got lots of ideas to help keep the mag at the top of its game.”
Men’s magazines, especially traditional ‘lads mags’ have had a turbulent couple of years, with leading industry figures predicting their days are numbered (see James Brown Unveils Jack).
However, the latest ABC figures for Loaded painted a relatively stable circulation picture, with sales up by 1.2% at 309,041 from 305,444 in the same period in 2001. However, this is still a long way from its heyday in the nineties, when it regularly recorded circulation figures around the 450,000 mark.
